These awards seek to honor everyone from emerging writers to leaders in the field, as well as to promote different modes of literary production. For information on writing programs in prison across the United States, click here to access our living document database.

Prison & Justice Writing

We strive towards an increasingly integrative approach, aiming to amplify the voices and writing of imprisoned people to expand beyond the silo of prison, and identity of prisoner. Each year, thousands of free copies are sent to incarcerated men and women. Mellon Foundation —aims to create a global network of organizations and resources to ensure that when artists are threatened or in peril, they will have place to turn for immediate help and resources.

This survey revealed a number of challenges in the current landscape of support, which ARC aims to address accordingly. Our program supports free expression, and encourages the use of the written word as a legitimate form of power.

We pen prison writing awards hundreds of imprisoned writers across the country with free writing resources, skilled mentors, and audiences for their work.

We are proud to share our deepening commitment to confronting our era of mass incarceration with the launch of the PEN America Writing For Justice Fellowship. Applications open on April PEN America awards have been characterized as being among the "major" literary awards in America.

They send letters to the governments concerned and lobby their own governments to campaign for the release of detained writers and for investigations in cases of torture and killings. The program is designed in response to a background study conducted by PEN America in to explore possible ways to enhance support for individual artists at risk.

The program is organized so that each mentor corresponds with the prisoner a minimum of three times.

Annual Prison Writing Contest

A Journal for Writers and Readers[ edit ] PEN America is a semi-annual literary journal that publishes fiction, nonfiction, poetry, conversation, criticism, graphic narrative, and more. As a mission it seeks to champion international authors and provide first-hand insight into the minds of contemporary writers through provocative symposia.

Writing for Justice Fellowship The PEN America Writing For Justice Fellowship will commission six writers—emerging or established—to create written works of lasting merit that illuminate critical issues related to mass incarceration and catalyze public debate.

The program seeks to provide a place for inmates to express themselves freely with paper and pen and to encourage the use of the written word as a legitimate form of power.

Through individual mail correspondence mentors who are Committee members, working writers or MFA students provide careful criticism, tips on craft, and guidance in the fundamentals of grammar to inmates around the country.

There is also a "Reader" tier of membership open to the general public, as well as a "Student" membership.PEN America sponsors an annual writing contest for prisoners.

Anyone incarcerated in a federal, state, or county prison in the year before the September 1 deadline is eligible to enter. Prizes of $, $, and $ are awarded for first, second, and third place, respectively, in each of the.
